From the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s always been a very Jewish approach to Torah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; As soon as we finish &#8211; we start again!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something we should appreciate. Be proud of.<\/p>\n<p>And make sure we continue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; The love for learning. The endless passion to know more.<\/p>\n<p>And &#8211; most importantly &#8211; never to say: &#8220;I know that already.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Instead? &#8220;Let&#8217;s take another look. Maybe I&#8217;ll see something different this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s what kept Torah &#8211; and the Jewish People &#8211; alive for three thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>2. STORY OF THE WEEK<\/p>\n<p>1950. Tens of thousands of Yemenite Jews arrive in Israel. With different customs and way of life. And that&#8217;s to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>But one thing is especially surprising.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; When they read a page of Hebrew writing &#8211; many of them don&#8217;t bother to make sure the page is right-side up.<\/p>\n<p>They just take it and read it &#8211; whatever direction it is facing.<\/p>\n<p>People checked into it. And then they understood.<\/p>\n<p>Something pretty remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; The Jewish community in Yemen was very poor. They barely had the money even for necessities. Let alone luxuries.<\/p>\n<p>Yet every one of their tiny, impoverished synagogues, had at least one copy of all the basic books of Torah and Talmud.<\/p>\n<p>That was a priority. No matter what the cost. It was as important as food and water.<\/p>\n<p>And of course they all studied and attended classes. They sat around the table. Around the one precious book. And they read.<\/p>\n<p>All from the same volume. From every possible angle.<\/p>\n<p>And, over the years, they did this so much, that it became natural.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; It&#8217;s pretty amazing. How they lacked almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>Except very Jewish priorities.<\/p>\n<p>3. &#8220;G-D SAID: \u201cBEHOLD I HAVE GIVEN YOU&#8230;EVERY TREE THAT HAS SEED BEARING FRUIT. IT SHALL BE YOURS FOR FOOD\u201d. (1:29)<\/p>\n<p>G-d said: \u201cBehold I have given you&#8230;every tree that has seed bearing fruit. It shall be yours for food\u201d. (1:29)<\/p>\n<p>Genesis is a portion that deals with some really big things.<\/p>\n<p>Like the creation of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Which means that life has a purpose.<\/p>\n<p>And the creation of man in the Image of G-d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 What can be more central than that to Jewish tradition?<\/p>\n<p>And then there are the small details. Which also have great lessons.<\/p>\n<p>They just sometimes get lost in the big picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 One example: The Torah describes G-d telling Adam what he can eat.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And every tree that has seed bearing fruit\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Which is a pretty strange way to say it. Why mention the seeds altogether?<\/p>\n<p>Can you picture telling a guest: \u2018Please help yourself to some of those fruit with seeds in them\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Jewish tradition says that there\u2019s an important message here. About fruit. And about life.<\/p>\n<p>Next time we eat a fruit, we should do more than just eat it.<\/p>\n<p>We should take a good look at it.
