1. “IN THE BEGINNING G-D CREATED<\/p>\n
This Shabbat, in synagogues around the world, we’re back to square one.
\nStarting to study the Torah all over again. From the beginning.<\/p>\n
It’s always been a very Jewish approach to Torah.<\/p>\n
… As soon as we finish – we start again!<\/p>\n
It’s something we should appreciate. Be proud of.<\/p>\n
And make sure we continue.<\/p>\n
… The love for learning. The endless passion to know more.<\/p>\n
And – most importantly – never to say: “I know that already.”<\/p>\n
Instead? “Let’s take another look. Maybe I’ll see something different this time.”<\/p>\n
It’s what kept Torah – and the Jewish People – alive for three thousand years.<\/p>\n
2. STORY OF THE WEEK<\/p>\n
1950. Tens of thousands of Yemenite Jews arrive in Israel. With different customs and way of life. And that’s to be expected.<\/p>\n
But one thing is especially surprising.<\/p>\n
… When they read a page of Hebrew writing – many of them don’t bother to make sure the page is right-side up.<\/p>\n
They just take it and read it – whatever direction it is facing.<\/p>\n
People checked into it. And then they understood.<\/p>\n
Something pretty remarkable.<\/p>\n
… The Jewish community in Yemen was very poor. They barely had the money even for necessities. Let alone luxuries.<\/p>\n
Yet every one of their tiny, impoverished synagogues, had at least one copy of all the basic books of Torah and Talmud.<\/p>\n
That was a priority. No matter what the cost. It was as important as food and water.<\/p>\n
And of course they all studied and attended classes. They sat around the table. Around the one precious book. And they read.<\/p>\n
All from the same volume. From every possible angle.<\/p>\n
And, over the years, they did this so much, that it became natural.<\/p>\n
… It’s pretty amazing. How they lacked almost everything.<\/p>\n
Except very Jewish priorities.<\/p>\n
3. “G-D SAID: \u201cBEHOLD I HAVE GIVEN YOU…EVERY TREE THAT HAS SEED BEARING FRUIT. IT SHALL BE YOURS FOR FOOD\u201d. (1:29)<\/p>\n
G-d said: \u201cBehold I have given you…every tree that has seed bearing fruit. It shall be yours for food\u201d. (1:29)<\/p>\n
Genesis is a portion that deals with some really big things.<\/p>\n
Like the creation of the universe.<\/p>\n
\u2026 Which means that life has a purpose.<\/p>\n
And the creation of man in the Image of G-d.<\/p>\n
\u2026 What can be more central than that to Jewish tradition?<\/p>\n
And then there are the small details. Which also have great lessons.<\/p>\n
They just sometimes get lost in the big picture.<\/p>\n
\u2026 One example: The Torah describes G-d telling Adam what he can eat.<\/p>\n
\u2018And every tree that has seed bearing fruit\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u2026 Which is a pretty strange way to say it. Why mention the seeds altogether?<\/p>\n
Can you picture telling a guest: \u2018Please help yourself to some of those fruit with seeds in them\u2019?<\/p>\n
… Jewish tradition says that there\u2019s an important message here. About fruit. And about life.<\/p>\n
Next time we eat a fruit, we should do more than just eat it.<\/p>\n
We should take a good look at it. Notice the tiny little seeds.<\/p>\n
Think about how this fruit came into being.<\/p>\n
\u2026 And we should say, \u2018Wow!\u2019<\/p>\n
Because there are two kinds of miracles.<\/p>\n
Some that happen rarely.<\/p>\n
And others that happen every day.<\/p>\n
