\nTORAH PORTION: KI-SAITZAI (DEUTERONOMY 21:10 – 25:19)

But it does give us something else.<\/p>\n … Obligations.<\/p>\n Like always being especially sensitive to the suffering of others.<\/p>\n Rabbi Yekusiel Halberstam – the late Chassidic Rabbi of Klausenberg – is a good example. He survived. And went on to rebuild his community and its institutions. And he also built something else.<\/p>\n A hospital in Israel. A unique institution providing patient-centered high quality health care for all persons in need and in accordance with principles of halacha \u2013 traditional Jewish law.<\/p>\n Why did the Rabbi decide to build a hospital?<\/p>\n It was because of his experiences in the concentration camp. When he endured so much personal suffering and loss.<\/p>\n His response? He made a promise.<\/p>\n That if he survives the war he would dedicate his life to others.<\/p>\n To help relieve their suffering. To make their lives better.<\/p>\n \u2026 And that’s exactly what he did.<\/p>\n What happens when we see a siddur \u2013 a Jewish Prayer Book \u2013 that fell to the floor?<\/p>\n Traditionally we pick it up right away. And show our love. By giving it a kiss.<\/p>\n \u2026 It\u2019s a beautiful custom. And it should get us thinking.<\/p>\n … A siddur has no feelings and we react that way.<\/p>\n What about a person? A human being with sensitivity and feelings.<\/p>\n \u2026 What happens when we see a person who has fallen? Or maybe is just down?<\/p>\n Shouldn\u2019t we stop what we are doing to \u2018lift him up\u2019, and to show our love and concern?<\/p>\n \u201cSmall minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events.
